As we spoke, my friend mentioned how her own 1-year-old niece was going through the exact same cycle.

And it made me pause and reflect on something beautiful about nature.

As children, especially in the early years, they fall sick often.

Their bodies are exposed to new environments, new bacteria, new viruses. They struggle. They cry. They become weak.

But through that very process, the immune system develops.

The body learns. Adapts. Strengthens.

And over time, the child becomes more resilient because of what they went through—not because they avoided it.

That is nature.

And perhaps life functions the same way.

We Must Fall to Stand

There’s a powerful line from Alfred in Batman Begins:

“Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.”

That line feels deeper the more one observes life carefully.

Because nature itself seems designed this way.

Strength is rarely built through comfort alone.

Whether physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually — growth often comes through resistance.

Modern Society Often Tries to Avoid Discomfort

Today, many people are conditioned to see challenges only as interruptions:

  • stress
  • setbacks
  • failure
  • criticism
  • uncertainty

Something to escape from quickly.

But what if many of these experiences are not punishments…

but processes?

What if struggle is not always a sign that life is against you…

but that life is shaping you?

Resilience Is Not Built Theoretically

You cannot build physical immunity without exposure.

Similarly, resilience in life is rarely built through theory alone.

It develops through:

  • difficult conversations
  • uncertainty
  • pressure
  • mistakes
  • emotional setbacks
  • responsibility
  • failure
  • standing back up again

This applies not only to personal life, but also within organizations.

The Corporate World Often Misunderstands Resilience

Many organizations speak about resilience today.

Workshops are conducted. Programs are introduced. Mental wellbeing becomes a topic of discussion.

And these are important.

But resilience is not simply positive thinking during difficulty.

Real resilience develops when individuals learn to remain stable while moving through challenge.

Not by avoiding pressure — but by learning through it.

Because leadership, maturity, emotional strength, and clarity are not built in ideal conditions alone.

They are revealed and strengthened under pressure.

Even Nature Operates Through Resistance

Muscles strengthen through resistance.

Bones strengthen under load.

The immune system develops through exposure.

And perhaps human maturity develops the same way.

Challenges test us.

But they also expand us.

They reveal:

  • where we react
  • where we hesitate
  • where we fear
  • where we lack clarity
  • where we still need to grow

The Important Difference

This does not mean suffering should be glorified unnecessarily.

Nor does it mean people should remain in unhealthy environments.

But it does mean this:

Not every difficulty is destruction.

Some difficulties are development.

A Reflection

Perhaps one of the greatest mistakes we make is assuming growth should feel comfortable.

Nature itself suggests otherwise.

The child develops immunity by facing exposure. The body develops strength through resistance. And
